A men’s breakfast is always a top fixture in the calendar:
The Men
There is something about a men’s gathering, the vibe is different – simplicity, unity, brotherhood, maybe a sense of space, a sense of camaraderie, we are on this journey together, and we’re not that much different from each other. Maybe just the chance to sit, talk and complete a conversation, getting to know someone better. Men are generally bad at this (I know I’m one), so having it organised for us makes it so much simpler, a taste of what should be, but we don’t make enough time for. The best ingredients: people and time carved out.
The Breakfast
I’ve never known a bad breakfast. There is never any disappointment in the volume, quality or timing. We arrived and coffee and tea were ready, we sat down, had a chat for 10-15 minutes and then breakfast was served. No dramas in the kitchen (well done Adrian and team), smooth, efficient, friendly service, topped up with a bit of bread and butter or pastries. We were sitting down to eat in no time, drink more coffee, chat, more coffee and then pause before the talk started.
The Content
Two friends I invited came along (I’d spammed my WhatsApp friendship groups). Having been to a couple of events before they were confident of an interesting time and a breakfast bonus. The talk on Football, Fleet Street and Faith by Tim Allan of News of the World was something hard to resist. I felt confident that we all would enjoy something in the talk. Tim did a great job, some professional anecdotes, some personal ones and two simple invitations: 1) for those who do believe, to invite someone to explore about Jesus (that’s how it started for him), and 2) for those who don’t – take some time to investigate the claims of Jesus. Tim left some time for questions which tended to revolve around being a Christian in a reputedly very unchristian environment, he answered these honestly and frankly.
The Time
“They think it’s all over” – it was by 10am. After the talk we were just settling in for the morning, ready to continue the rare time together. Jon closed the breakfast with some prompts about Christianity Explored and copies of Mark’s gospel being available to take home.
“When’s the next one? Book me in,” said one friend. The other had some differing opinions which we said we’d follow up sometime. Both would be happy to come again. As for me the men’s breakfast always exceeds expectations – I recommend that you put the next fixture in your diary.
