‘For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing: it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.’ (Ephesians 2:8,9 New American Standard Bible)

These are some of my favourite verses. Why? They begin with the gospel declaration that salvation is by grace through faith in Jesus alone. It’s a free gift! This is good news! These are fundamental truths as we come to understand what it means to be a follower of Jesus. But what if we read a bit further?

‘For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.’ (Ephesians 2:10)

We were not created by accident, but intentionally. And what’s more, good works are waiting for each of us to step into.

Does this excite you? What are your gifts and abilities? (God has equipped each of his followers.) What are you good at? Where might God use you?

You might know that St Mary’s has a wonderful team offering English lessons and conversation practice as well as Bible studies for people who speak English as an additional language. Most of these opportunities require students to come to the church site. And we’re very thankful for the resources we have. But some people won’t feel comfortable coming to us or are less able to get to us.

So, let’s go to them.

We’re looking for a small team to go into the local Holiday Inn to love and serve the wonderful people there. We will go with you. All training and member care will be provided.

So, here’s where you start dreaming… Could you help with a homework club for primary or secondary students? Could you captain fun and games during a school holiday? Could you start a small band or choir for students or adults? Could you assist in writing CVs? Could you coach people studying for the “Life in the UK Test” or the driving theory test? This is just the start… what can you dream up? What good works has God prepared for you? Let’s walk in them.
