Get to know us

Of course, in a sense, a church family is as diverse as every individual that makes it up! But we like to think the following four headlines are central to our DNA at St Mary's.

Will Stileman, our vicar, often says ‘St Mary’s is not a hotel for saints, but a hospital for sinners’.

Church can have an appearance of being full of ‘sorted’ and ‘holy’ people. But this is certainly not the case at St Mary’s! Many of us are broken and hurting, feel our weakness and know our faults.

The thing that brings us together is the conviction that Jesus loves and welcomes people like us, and calls us to care for each other as well.

Jesus is the centre of everything we do and stand for at St Mary’s. We believe that:

  • he is at the heart of God’s plans for the world
  • he has acted in amazing love towards us, by dying on the cross for our sin
  • his resurrection gives us hope in the face of death

In response we seek to live our lives for him.

We believe that God has told us everything we need to know about Jesus in the Bible. That’s why we look together at the Bible as one of the ministers preaches each week.

We are convinced that the Holy Spirit works powerfully as God’s Word is declared, and so the Bible is central to every area of our church life at St Mary’s.

We are excited about the wonderful news of Jesus and long for others to come and experience the ‘life to the full’ that Jesus promised. We regularly run events for people who want to find out more about Jesus such as Christianity Explored.

As a town centre church we seek to have an active presence for good in our community. See our Reaching Out section for more information.
